Famous Comedian Fighting Sexual Assault Case

On October 16, 2014, famous comedian Bill Cosby became a spectacle after a few comedic remarks suggested that he sexually assaulted women. According to Luchina Fisher, a writer for ABC News, comedian, Hannibal Buress, made the joke heard around the world. While performing in Cosby’s home town of Philadelphia, Burress mocked Cosby’s public persona. “Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the ’80s,” he said in the bit. “Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches.” Things went into an uproar after that.

Following the October performance by Buress, women started to come forward with alleged stories of sexual assault involving Cosby. According to Fisher’s article the first to come forward was a woman by the name of Barbara Bowman, who first publicly accused Cosby of sexual assault in 2006 and was a witness in another woman’s case against the comedian. Bowman published a story in the Washington Post titled, “Bill Cosby raped me. Why did it take 30 years for people to believe my story?” She wrote that it was only after a male comedian called Cosby a rapist that the “public outcry began in earnest.”

It did not take long for women to begin coming forward with accusations against Cosby. During the month of November 2014, several women came forward. Among those women was supermodel, Janice Dickenson. The supermodel claimed that Cosby drugged and raped her in 2002.

Dr. Judith Curtis, an award winning professor at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke shared her opinion on the issues concerning the comedian.

“He broke new ground in the television field in opening up opportunities for black comedians and black actors.  He also made contributions in the field of education.  However, his alleged, and seemingly long-term, pattern of sexual abuse of women is not acceptable behavior,” Dr. Curtis said.

As the rape allegations against Cosby continued to rise, television networks began to pull the comedians shows off the air. Among those networks were, TV Land, BET, Bounce TV, and Centric.

“From a public relations, marketing, and advertising stand point, taking the shows off the air was probably thought to be necessary because his name and persona are so damaged” Dr. Curtis said.

Many have taken to social media to express their feelings concerning the allegations against Cosby. The question is has the media gone to far with publicizing the case?

“The media should report the facts as they are known and offer both sides opportunities to be heard.  The media should refrain from offering their personal opinions about the alleged incidents,” Dr. Curtis said.

At least two of the cases against Cosby have been dropped in the last month, including the case involving Janice Dickinson.

The Status of News Media

The website, journalgirl15.com, focuses on news media and entertainment. Carolina Panthers and their Fans prepare for Super Bowl 50

North Carolinians are still rejoicing over the victory of the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, January 24. The intense football game ended with a score of 49- 15. A sweet victory for the Carolina Panthers. As the the team prepares for the super bowl, the fans are racing to the store to buy t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, key chains, and much more.

“I just need to make sure I get my gear before it’s all gone”, Panthers fan, Christina Pennie said.

On February 7, 2016, the Carolina Panthers will play the Denver Broncos in San Francisco, otherwise known as Super Bowl City. Fans of both teams are proud and ready for the historic weekend. The last time the Panthers played was in 2004 against the New England Patriots. Since then, the team has changed and they are ready to take on the Bronco’s.

Sport’s Specialist, David Cobb, has been following the Panthers since he was young boy. He believes that the Super Bowl will end with a victory for the team.

“It’s obvious that the panthers are hungry. Cam Newton is taking ownership and being a leader for the Panthers. He puts his team first and it shows”, Cobb said.

Cam Newton is the Panthers Quarter Back.  After last season something changed in Newton. He came back this season with a vengeance. He wasn’t accepting any losses. As a result, the Panthers win-loss numbers are 15-1.

“When the Panthers loss to the Atlanta Falcons, their starting running back, Jonathon Stewart was out of game due to a foot injury. When a key player is missing, the team can sometimes suffer. That’s all irrelevant now, because they made it to the biggest game of the year. Props to Coach Rivera for excellent coaching,” Cobb said.

According to the Carolina Panthers team page on http://www.nfl.com/teams/carolinapanthers/profile?team=CAR, Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera received a boisterous and supportive Super Bowl send-off from fans and neighbors as he left his Charlotte, North Carolina, home this morning.

“The team was continuously doubted but look at them now, they are on their way to the Super Bowl”, Panthers fan John Pennie Said.

The public NFL website, http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/50, gives fans a glimpse of what is to come in the week ahead.

According to the site, opening night is on Monday, February 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Throughout the whole week, fans will witness the NFL experience. Kick off is on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

News, Politics, and Entertainment: The Broad Field of Journalism

Research shows that journalism is a very broad field. According to learn.org, the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics says that there are journalism types by medium and message. The types by medium are print journalism, photojournalism, broadcast journalism, and multimedia journalism. Some popular types by message are beats such as, sports, business, politics, arts and culture, education, and crime.

Journalgirl15.com focuses on news, politics, entertainment, and fashion. News is defined as newly received, noteworthy information. Political journalism is defined as a broad branch of journalism that covers all aspects of politic and political science. (Wikipedia.org) Entertainment journalism is defined as coverage of news and events within industries of film, television, music, live events, video games, and others.

When dealing with news, it is important to remember the who, what, when, where, and why. This is otherwise known as “The Five W’s”. Former editor in chief of the Pine Needle Newspaper at UNC Pembroke, Sara Owen, provided a lot of insight on news writing.

“To write a good news story you need to remember to, first, do your research and check your information twice before submitting. Second, keep your opinions out of it and remain objective. A journalists job is to tell the story as it is based on facts, not to give a biased version. Third, be ready to put yourself on the line for your story, your editor, and your sources. If you promise anonymity and you get told to give up your source, you need to be prepared to keep your word, even if that means getting in real life trouble. A true journalist will remain true to his or her word”, Owen said.

Judging by the looks of the things, political journalists are in for a interesting year. The 2016 presidential candidates are one of the most talked about topics in politics right now. The presidential election will surely be one to remember.

“The presidential race has become a big show of who can shock the viewers more, which is why Donald Trump gets so much more air time than someone like Bernie Sanders who doesn’t do anything for shock value. Trump gets attention for being entertaining in his own right. He is basically a walking personification of the 7 news values. He is a celebrity, of sorts, who does bizarre things and says things that affect people”, Owen said.

According to the career insight on getinmedia.com, entertainment journalists dig up the stories of the latest Hollywood developments and follow the progress of next year’s major game releases, all for the anxious fans and enthusiasts who clamor for more. A great writer becomes an authority on the entertainment industry, a trusted source of information and insight. In the broad field of journalism, anything is possible.

My Website, from a Journalistic Perspective

As a journalist, I felt that it was important to create a website that focused on different topics. My website features topics such as entertainment, news, fashion, and political. There is also a freestyle section that can feature stories about anything that comes to mind. The overall theme of the website, is the freedom to be creative in journalism. I’m not referring to creative writing, because there is a difference between the two.

According to an article by Angelo Lorenzo, journalism and creative writing are two opposite ends of the literary rope. Their difference is grounded on the fact that journalism relies heavily on the truth, facts, current events, and knowledge. Creative writing, on the other hand, comprises much on art, fiction, and imagination. This is why these two ends don’t meet. (Lorenzo, 2014)

The first topic featured on my website is entertainment. Author, Goran Bolin wrote an article that discussed television journalism, politics, and entertain, entertainment. In the article, the author noted that journalism is said to be increasingly subsumed an economic logic, privileging entertainment before serious journalistic practices. The article goes further to say that it is often pointed to a changed relation between journalism and politicians, where the latter have lost some of their power, for example, in political debates. This article relates these two trends and argues, against a field model inspired by Bourdieu, that it is not entertainment that is eating its way into journalism, but the other way around. (Bolin, 2014)

News is a big deal in the world we live in, because something is always happening.According to Lorenzo, news articles, feature stories, sports news, and many others found in broadsheets and tabloids belong to journalism. He noted that in this side of writing, the writer must gather credible sources to write informational truth behind current issues. The issues should contain reliable facts that tell the masses any ongoing circumstance or situations happening in the community, country, and the world. It’s typical news. It should be informative, honest, and un-biased. I chose to include fashion and political stories on website because these are two popular topics today. (Lorenzo, 2014)

PetSmart Hosts Pet Adoption Tent Event

Fayetteville—On Saturday Nov. 14, 2015, eight dogs became members of a new family. Tilted Acres Rescue and Adoptions (T.A.R.A), Inc. hosted pet adoption tent in the parking of Pet’s Mart on Ramsey Street. The event began at 10 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m. Another event was held on Sunday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With the weather not too hot and not too cold, many people attended the event, petting the animals, and some adopting them.

“I love the pet adoption events. The only thing is, it’s sad because there are those that get adopted and then those that are left behind at the end of the day. That is the hardest part about going to pet adoptions”, local woman Dorothy Crosby said. If I could take them all, I would, she said.

Tilted Acres Rescue and Adoptions is a non-profit an no-kill organization whose main goal is finding loving homes for homeless animals.

“Any event that helps us get pets into loving homes is a great success”, T.A.R.A Vice President, Becky Sasala said.

T.A.R.A is partnered with PetSmart and they plan to continue hosting the pet adoption events in the future.

“Every four months we sponsor these tent events. Different adoption agencies come together so that we can raise awareness of homeless pets and try to help people find their new best friend”, Sasala said.

The adoption fee of $100 (for any animal) includes spay or neuter, microchip, rabies vaccination, all other age appropriate vaccinations, and 30 days of free pet health insurance.

firststageautistickids_fullsize_story1

Writing a stage a play is good way to channel your inner actor/actress.  There are several different types of plays. Follow these quick steps and you’ll have your first stage play written before you know it.

Step 1: Choose the type of play you want to write.

There are several different types of stage plays. It is important to choose the type of play you want to write. The most common types of stage plays are as follows; Ten-minute plays,  one-act plays, full-length plays, and musicals.

Step2: Create your antagonist

Choosing a main character and the conflict will help you to create a full story to base your play on.

Step 3: Create your protagonist

If you have a main character then you need the character that is a part of the conflict. To provide true entertainment, the play must have a conflict so that there is a climax.

Step 4: Create a setting

This will help you to have an idea of the type of stage space, props, and costumes you will need.

Step 5: Write a story to determine the rest of characters

Writing off the top of your head makes the best stage plays. While this is true for some, it is best to take your time so that you can avoid having to go back and change things later. Conflict, characters, and dialogue are the most important aspects of writing your stage play.

All in all, a stage play takes a creative mind. Use yours to express your art.

Can Journalism be Silent?

“Journalism can never be silent: That is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air.” – Henry Anatole Grunwald
